Notice on Sale and Purchase of Dog Training Devices
In line with efforts to safeguard animal health and welfare, the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of the National Parks Board (NParks), recommends the use of the Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive (LIMA) training approach. These include reward-based training such as using treats, toys, play, or attention to reinforce desirable behaviour.
The LIMA approach does not condone the use of positive punishment, such as the use of shock or prong collars, as a first line of approach in dog training and behaviour modification. More information on the guidelines for dog training and behavior rehabilitation can be found here.
The code of animal welfare sets Minimum Standards and explains the responsibilities of pet owners to help them understand how to provide a good and comfortable life for their pets. Pet owners and those in the pet industry may refer to Code of Animal Welfare (For Pet Owners) or Code of Animal Welfare (Pet Industry) for more details.
Pet owners may also consider the AVS-Accredited Certified Dog Trainer (ACDT) Scheme to better manage dog aggression and other disamenities in an effective and humane way. Please click here to see the list of accredited dog trainers by AVS.
