Guidelines for use of the Singapore National Flag

The use, display and treatment of the National Flag is governed by the National Symbols Act 2022.

 

The following guidelines outline some of the key provisions from the Act and its accompanying Regulations, and are intended to ensure the National Flag is treated with respect at all times.

1. Display of the National Flag

During the National day celebrations period from 1st July 2025 to 30th September 2025, restrictions on the display of the National Flag will be relaxed. 

 

  • During the National day celebrations period, the National flag may be displayed on buildings and without the requirement of being flown from a flagpole or illuminated at night.
  • When hung, the National Flag should be hung against a vertical wall/ flat surface, with the crescent and stars at the upper left red section situated at the top left (when facing the National Flag) 
  • The National Flag should not be displayed upside down. 
  • When displayed from homes, the National flag should not be obscured or covered by laundry or footwear
  • Flags displayed for National Day celebrations should be taken down by 30th September 2025, to protect the Flag from being worn out from extended display/ neglect.
 

2. Handling and use of the National Flag

The National Flag: 

  • Should not be placed on the floor, as it might dirty the National Flag 
  • Should not be damaged by physical means (e.g. burning, cutting shredding) 
  • Should be cleaned when dirty or replaced if faded or torn 
  • Should not be hung out to dry outdoors together with other laundry as it may be considered inappropriate 
  • Should not be used as a daily household item (e.g. tablecloth, doormat, towel) 
  • Should not be reworked, upcycled or converted into any forms of clothing or covering. 
  • Should not be used (1) in any trademark, (2) at any private funeral activity
 

3. Disposal of the National Flag

  • During disposal of the National Flag, it should be properly sealed in a black trash bag, and not left visible in the dustbins.
